Map

11 We leave the museum now and head off for Fulda, turning left at the river banks. Here on the Auedamm Claes Oldenburg’s pick-axe (9.) has been stuck in the ground since documenta 7 (1982). It weighs approximately 5 tonnes and is around 12m high. It is said that Herkules, Kassel’s landmark, hurled it from his Octagon waterfall on the Wilhelmshöhe down to where it landed because it forms an exact extension of the axis in the Wilhelmshöher Allee.

Continuing along the river bank we pass Kassel’s administrative centre (10.), the Renthof and the Brüderkirche church. We cross the street at Leipziger Straße and go past the Markthalle (11.) and the Marstall (former royal stables) towards the Martinskirche (12.).

Martinskirche Nowadays St. Martin, as it is officially known, is the church of the Protestant bishopric for Kurhessen and Waldeck. The church has a long tradition of ecclesiastical music.
One of the organs was inaugurated by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1732. In addition to classical concerts the Martinskirche provides a forum for a programme of events known as " New Music in the Church" which takes place every two years. The church’s twin towers are a city landmark.
