Museums
Naturkundemuseum
Ottoneum
Among the most important exhibits is the oldest systematic plant collection in Europe, the 400-year-old
" Ratzenberger Herbarium ", the "Schildbach Wood Library" from the 18th century and the so-called "Goethe-Elephant", one of the very earliest preserved skeletons of a large mammal.
In the section entitled “Regional History of Earth and Nature” visitors can see how the environment in the Kassel region has changed over the course of millions of years. From the days of antiquity up to the present day exhibits depicting how life developed and progressed provide insight into the local animal and plant worlds of bygone ages. Illustrating this are life-size recreated models of a dinosaur, a bear in his cave and a giant mammoth.
Today’s north-hessian living areas like Fuldaaue and Buchenwald are also on view together with their many animal and plant species in lifelike displays behind glass.
Insight into these animal and plant species are provided by the sections “Birds Worldwide” and “Colourful Insect World”.
In addition to tours, workshops and teacher get-togethers, the natural history museum’s information section also has cases of fossils for hire. An extensive six-month programme features talks, excursions, children’s birthday events, fairy-tale readings and much, much more.
