Löwenburg

Picturesque Location in Wilhelmshöhe Berg Park

armour

The Löwenburg with its picturesque location in Wilhelmshöhe Berg Park on the edge of the Wolfsschlucht ravine has the outwardly defiant appearance of a medieval knight’s castle.

L _wenburg Inside, however, the castle contains magnificent living quarters of a baroque design, on a par with everything the prince’s court had to offer. The castle was built by Landgrave Wilhelm IX at the end of the 18th century at a time of great social upheaval. With its outward appearance of a seemingly very old ruined castle, the Löwenburg evokes not only siege attacks and enemies being driven back, it also seems to lend an air of legitimacy to the ruling claims made by the House of Hesse-Kassel by emphasising the ancient lineage of the prince’s line.

In addition to the armoury containing suits of armour from the 16th and 17th century and the castle chapel containing the castle-builder’s tomb, visitors can also currently view large sections of the princely residence in the men’s and women’s quarters, some of which are furnished while others now function as museums.
