Three Major Collections located at Brüder-Grimm-Platz
This museum houses three major collections: pre- and early history on the ground floor with exhibits dating back to the Palaeolithic Period (up to 400,000 years old), the Neolithic Period (6th/5th millennium B.C.) culminating in the Bronze Age (exhibits found predominantly in the northernmost part of Hesse)
On the first floor the German Wallpaper Museum traces the history of wall coverings starting with baroque (wallpaper of golden leather) and continuing into the 18th century (wallpaper made of wax and paper), the 19th century (Biedermeier period, panoramic wallpaper) and into the 20th century, including artistic wallpaper and designer patterns.
On the second floor the crafts’ and sculptures collection covers a period of 1000 years of history of art and culture with an exhibition entitled “Art Treasures from 800 to 1800”. Following the successful refurbishing of the exhibition rooms in 2001 precious exhibits connected with the history of Hesse’s ruling princes are on display.
