Karlsaue – the Baroque Park
Guided sightseeing tour
This garden, which is the oldest of the three Landgrave gardens, was built below the former royal palace outside the medieval city. From Moritzaue, the renaissance pleasure grounds situated on marshland on the River Fulda, Landgrave Karl started building a vast baroque park in 1680.
The park is flanked by a so-called “bowling green” in front of the Orangery and by three avenues and two ditches which spread out in the shape of a fan. The main avenue takes visitors from the Orangery to the large basin comprising the Schwaneninsel (Swan Island).
The panoramic view continues towards the Siebenbergen Island with its array of trees and flowers. Several landscape architects were involved in the design of the park, including Le Nôtre in Versailles, regarded as the most famous garden architect of his time. During the tour visitors can trace the transformation of this princely complex to a popular recreation spot on the outskirts of the city centre.
