Churches in the City Centre
Guided sightseeing tour
In the course of history Kassel experienced different religious eras and developments. The proof of this are the many churches in the city centre; for example, the Gothic-style Brüderkirche under the aegis of the Carmelite order, the Martinskirche which is now the church of the Protestant bishopric for Kurhessen-Waldeck or the Karlskirche, built by the Huguenots, French refugees persecuted for their faith, as a spiritual centre in what was once the Oberneustadt quarter.
The Elisabethkirche, a Catholic church, had to be rebuilt after the war just as the Lutherkirche had a sombre building added on to the only surviving tower. The historical development of churches in Kassel and their significance in a modern context constitute the main theme of this exciting tour.
